Out in suburban Hillside, there's a delicious
mouthful called Priscilla's Ultimate Soul Food Cafeteria West. It's the
pride of Priscilla & Mansfield Redmond and the favorite of
families & kiddies & nearby business folks who flock there for
its bounty of southern fixins at bargain prices.
There's the famous gumbo on Friday or crispy catfish & perch, or my
favorite, smothered pork chops - all with super sides!
And every day, there's glorious fried chicken, the best this side of
the south side! Finally, those dozen desserts are scrumptious!
Meanwhile, on the northwest side, Tre Kronor is a Scandinavian gem.
This snug and charming place with its colorful folk art has been welcoming
faithful fans from dawn-to-dusk: at breakfast for its Swedish pancakes
with lingonberries and delicate Danish ... at lunch, for a variety of
quiche ... and at dinner, with co-owner Patty Rasmussen in the kitchen,
the menu really sings with starters like gravlox and pickled herring. And
there are such beautiful entrees as fresh rainbow trout or elegantly
simple Norwegian salmon. Vaersågod. Ja-Ja. JA!
Finally, just off busy-busy Devon Avenue is the amazing Hema's Kitchen!
In a crowded 30-seat storefront, this is a cozy-family-love-affair between
Chef-owner Hema Potla, her staff and customers, regulars who come for
Hema's splendid Indian cooking: the breads, pulka & poori; chicken
masala & spicy lamb with potatoes; and countless other dishes such as
samosas & pakoras; the vegetarian and tandoori-style treats; rice
& veggies; sag paneer & chickpeas & lentils & on & on
... it all needs more space!
I want you to be the first to know that in November, Hema's is doubling
in size - so I guess it will be a larger "Little Wonder Restaurant."
